Chichen
Itza once served as the political and economic
center of Mayan civilization. The city housed
masterpieces like the Temple of Chac Mool,
the Hall of the Thousand Pillars, the Playing
Field of the Prisoners and the pyramid of
Kukulkan, which was the last Mayan temple.
It is the most visited
archaeological site in the peninsula of
Yucatan, due to its extraordinary architecture
beauty and its geographical location.
Origin of Name- The name
Chichén Itzá, is derived from
the Mayan language: "Chi" - mouth,
"Chen" - well and "Itza"
- the tribe that inhabited the area.The
Mayan people are most famous for their brilliant
and advanced astronomical knowledge and
their resiliency.
The ruins-
are divided into two groups. One group belongs
to the classic Maya Period.The other group
corresponds to the Maya-Toltec Period.Chichen
Itza, not only has one of the best preserved
and rebuilt pyramids of the Mayan world,
but it is home to many other impressive
groups.
Chichén
Itzá Architecture-The architectural
characteristics of Chichen Itza have a direct
relationship with the Mayan Toltec style.The
archaeological site is divided into 3 areas:
the Northern group, the Central group and
the Southern area known as the Old Chichen.
Its various structures
- the pyramid of Kukulkan, the
Temple of Chac Mool, the Hall of the Thousand
Pillars, and the Playing Field of the Prisoners.The
pyramid itself was the greatest, of all
Mayan temples.
